Center for Health Policy and Services Research

About us

With the establishment of the Department of Public Health, and in
recognition of a more explicit focus on health policy, it was deemed appropriate to rename the Center (previously the Center for Public Health): The Center for Health Policy and Services Research. This name recognizes health policy broadly, but there is a particular interest in public health policy. Health Services Research is a well-established discipline in which both Drs Erwin and Myers, co-directors for the Center, have been involved; they also bring a particular focus to the emerging but related field of public health systems and services research, which explores the organization, funding, performance and outcomes related to local, state, and federal public health activities.

Strategic Direction
Strategic Direction: Following a series of meetings with the Center’s Board of Deans and Advisory Committee, the Center’s focus will shift more intentionally to health policy, including public health policy, and policy-related research, including public health systems and services research. Several initiatives support the Center’s new strategic direction:
o The establishment of the health policy certificate.
o The availability of “seed” grants for health policy-related research, including dissertations that have a health policy focus or that have significant health policy implications. Funding for the seed grants is provided through the UT Office of Research. For more information see link: Call for Seed Grant Proposals in Health Policy Research.
o In addition to the courses already being offered in the health policy certificate, additional special topics classes are being developed and will be made available to graduate students.
